Your screenshots, named in an instant
A native macOS menu bar app that watches for new screenshots and renames them automatically using on-device AI. No more Screenshot 2026-01-15 at 3.42.17 PM.png. Just clean, descriptive filenames—instantly.
The Problem
Screenshots pile up. File names mean nothing
Every Mac user takes screenshots. And every Mac user ends up with a desktop full of files named Screenshot 2026-01-15 at 10.42.33 AM.png. You rename them manually, or more likely, you don't—and finding anything later becomes a guessing game of timestamps and thumbnails.
How It Works
Take a screenshot. That's it
Rename My Screenshot lives in your menu bar. The moment you take a screenshot, it reads the content, identifies the app, and generates a clean, descriptive filename. The whole process takes under two seconds.
Screenshot detected
The app watches your Desktop and any folders you configure. When a new screenshot appears, it picks it up immediately.
On-device AI analyzes the image
Using Apple’s Vision framework, the app reads every word on screen—menu bars, page content, URLs—and identifies what you were looking at.
A descriptive filename is generated
The app combines the detected application, key content, and date into a clean kebab-case filename. slack-engineering-standup-notes-2026-01-15.png.
File renamed, you move on
The rename happens in place. A subtle notification confirms it. If you don’t like the name, edit it inline or undo with one click.
Features
Everything you need, nothing you don't
Smart App Detection
Recognizes 25+ apps from menu bar text—Slack, Chrome, Figma, VS Code, Notion, Arc, and more. Browser screenshots include the domain name automatically.
100% On-Device
All image analysis happens locally using Apple Vision and Natural Language frameworks. Your screenshots never leave your Mac. No cloud. No API calls. No data collection.
Configurable Naming
Use template tokens like {app}, {description}, {date}, and {time} to define your own naming format. Choose kebab-case or snake_case. Set max filename length. Add per-app rules.
Works With Your Tools
Supports native macOS screenshots (Cmd+Shift+3/4/5), CleanShot X, and Xnapper out of the box. Monitors any folder you point it at.
Rename History & Search
Every rename is logged with the full OCR text. Search your entire screenshot history by content—find that error message or Slack conversation months later.
Quick Edit & Undo
A floating confirmation panel lets you tweak the generated name before it sticks. Changed your mind? Undo any rename from the history panel.
Why We Built It
A problem we kept running into ourselves
We take a lot of screenshots at OTB—client feedback, design reviews, bug reports, reference material. We got tired of the manual rename-or-forget cycle, so we built the tool we wanted. Rename My Screenshot is an internal venture: built by our team, for our workflow, and now available to anyone who shares the same frustration.
